(NOTE: This page actually details with the specifics of "how to handle" a certain text file in the Fall99 International Minutes. To actually see how it works and try the system out, you will need your AMCA Username and Password to access the minutes on the secure (password protected) web site. AMCA Common Repertoire.)
How to Copy and Paste this text file into a word processor
- Download the file by clicking on it in the Browser window.
- Expand the file (Suffit Expander for Mac or Unzip for Windows users) - this may be done automatically on some computers.
- Open the file in Simple Text (Mac) or NotePad (Windows)
(NOTE: You may skip some steps and open it directly with your Word Processor, if you want to be brave, and skip to step 8.)
- Select all of the text (Click and drag over all of the document or use the Select All in the File menu)
- Copy all of the text that was selected (Mac - Command c, Windows - Control c, or use the Copy command in the Edit menu)
- Open a New Word Processor document in your favorite Word Processor (it doesn't matter which one)
- Paste the text that you copied into the new document (Mac - Command v, Windows - Control v, or use the Paste command in the Edit menu)
- Select the whole document and Format the new document with very small margins (something like .5 inches) and make sure the right margin is moved all the way to the right.
- Select the whole document again (if it is not already selected) (Same technic as above)
- Select a small size font (I recommend either Palatino or Times at 9 or 10 point)
- Place your tabs as you would any other word processor document and watch the text line up in columns.
- Move the tabs around until everything lines up the way it should. (The tabs are embeded in the text you downloaded and will respond to your selection.) (Make sure the whole text stays selected as you do this!)
Mine works just fine (but close) with a vertical 8.5x11 page with margins of .5 at left and right with a font size of 10 (Times).
- You can now format the headers, titles, and any other part of the text that you want in any way that you want.
(Note: This text file with tab separators can also be copied and pasted into a data base that has been set up in list view with 6 fields.)
Text files allow you maximum of freedom in formatting and don't require you to re-type all the material. They are wonderful for transfer of information.
Basic:
Opening a file:
- Easiest (on a Mac) is to drag the icon of the file on top of the icon of the application.
- On a Windows or Mac,
Launch the application and in the
File menu choose Open and
Navigate to the file that you want to open.
(Suggested to print this window and then close it before you download the file.)
